Casio G-Shock DW-5600E

The reference beater watch: three decades of documented abuse, and the failure mode is usually the owner losing it.

Why it’s here

The DW-5600E is the direct descendant of the 1983 DW-5000C, the watch that invented the entire shock-resistant category, and it has been in continuous production since 1996. It carries the original brief — survive a 10-meter drop, 10-bar pressure, and keep working — in the original square case, at a price that has barely moved in three decades. Most “tough” products advertise torture tests. This one has thirty years of owners running them involuntarily.

The story

In 1981, Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe dropped his father’s mechanical watch on a sidewalk and watched it shatter. His response became the “triple 10” development brief: a watch with a 10-year battery, 10-bar water resistance, and the ability to survive a 10-meter fall. After roughly two hundred prototypes — legendarily tested by throwing them from the lab’s bathroom window — the answer turned out to be a module floating inside a hollow resin case, inspired by a rubber ball.

The first G-Shock, the DW-5000C, launched in April 1983 to slow sales; tough watches weren’t fashionable. American TV ads showing a hockey player using one as a puck changed that. The DW-5600E arrived in 1996 as the cost-optimized keeper of the original square flame, and it has outsold and outlived every trend since.

Durability report

The architecture is the point: the quartz module floats inside a resin carrier, isolated from the case, so impacts that would shatter a conventional watch simply don’t reach anything that matters. 200-meter water resistance is rated for actual swimming and diving, not marketing. When Gear Patrol set out to break one deliberately, it survived balcony drops from three floors, hammer blows, and being run over by a car — repeatedly — before finally dying under a wheel edge-on. Owner reports — military, trades, surf forums — converge on the same story: the electronics essentially never die. What fails is the soft stuff. Resin straps and bezels embrittle under UV after five to ten years and start to chalk, crack, and shed corners. Casio sells both as spare parts, which tells you they know exactly how this watch ages.

The EL backlight is the one component with a genuine wear curve; heavy use shortens battery life toward the rated two years, and the panel itself dims over many years. The watch keeps working; it just glows less enthusiastically.

Repair & parts reality

Four screws open the case back. Battery (CR2016), strap, and bezel are ten-minute jobs with parts available from Casio and everywhere else. Complete replacement modules exist and cost little. As with the F-91W, nobody repairs the module itself — at ~$50 the watch is replaceable rather than serviceable, which is the only thing keeping its repairability score honest. The difference from a disposable product: a DW-5600E with a fresh battery, strap, and bezel is functionally a new watch, indefinitely.

The long-term math

Fifty dollars, a battery every few years, and perhaps $20 of resin parts per decade if you’re hard on it. Call it $4–6 a year for a watch that is rated for diving and engineered around the assumption you will drop it. Even the mainstream reviews agree: the cheapest G-Shock is also one of the best. The F-91W is cheaper; this is tougher. Between the two of them, Casio has quietly cornered the entire bottom of the durability-per-dollar curve.

The floating-module architecture is genuine mechanical engineering, not marketing armor — the case is designed as a crumple zone around a suspended core. Among resin watches only its own siblings compete; two points withheld for the consumable exterior.

Thirty years of continuous production for this reference and forty for the design language, with abuse survival independently torture-tested rather than merely claimed. One point shy of perfect because resin externals demonstrably age in UV.

Best for

Anyone whose watch has to survive job sites, deployments, oceans, or children — and who wants the original square, not a homage to it.

Watch out

The rated 2-year battery life is real if you use the backlight a lot. Resin bezel and strap will chalk and crack after 5–10 years of UV — both are cheap, official replacement parts, but they are consumables.
