A 1985 keyboard design still stamped out on the original Kentucky tooling, because nobody has invented a better way to hit a key.

Why it’s here

The buckling-spring Model M entered production at IBM in 1985. When the corporate line ended, former employees at Unicomp bought the actual tooling and kept manufacturing it in Lexington, Kentucky — where they still do. That makes the Model M one of the only consumer electronics designs on earth in essentially continuous production for forty years. The 1980s originals clacking away in server rooms today aren’t survivors; they’re just Model Ms.

The story

The Model M was IBM’s cost-reduction of the beamspring terminal keyboards — and the rare cost-reduction that became a legend in its own right. From 1985 it shipped with IBM PCs by the million; when IBM spun its keyboard business to Lexmark in 1991, production continued; and when Lexmark exited in 1996, a group of its employees bought the tooling and formed Unicomp rather than let the line die.

The current “New Model M,” introduced in March 2020, is that same design in a slightly trimmed case with native USB. It isn’t retro merchandise — it’s continuity. The same Kentucky machines, pressing the same buckling-spring assemblies, for the fifth consecutive decade. No other object on this scoreboard can claim its replacement parts are made on the tooling that made the original.

Durability report

The mechanism is the whole story: a physical spring buckles against a membrane, giving tactile and audible feedback that no amount of firmware can deprecate. There is no RGB to fail, no wireless stack to lose support, no switch soldering to fatigue — the moving parts are springs and keycaps, both nearly immortal. The honest weak point is internal: the barrel plate is held by plastic rivets that embrittle over decades; on thirty-year-old boards they shear, and the community answer (replacing rivets with bolts) is a permanent fix. Honesty also requires saying the Unicomp-era case molding shows flash and looser seams than IBM’s did. It types identically. It just wouldn’t win the concours.

Repair & parts reality

Keycaps pull off by hand, every cap and spring assembly is sold individually by Unicomp, and the company repairs boards it made decades ago. USB controllers on current models remove the last adapter excuse. Below that level, repair means the bolt mod — well documented, one long afternoon, completely proven. Parts score is capped only by the reality that the supply chain is substantially one small company in Kentucky plus a devoted salvage market.

The long-term math

$189 for a plausible twenty years is under $10 a year, versus the $150 gamer keyboard on its third replacement in the same window. The strongest evidence is the used market: reviewers keep reaching the same conclusion the salvage prices imply — forty-year-old examples routinely sell for more than a new Unicomp costs. Depreciation-proof is a durability grade all its own.

Build quality

A two-kilogram slab with a steel backplate and a spring mechanism that physically cannot be faked. Docked because Unicomp's case molding shows flash and looser seams than the IBM originals — cosmetic, but real.

Forty years of essentially continuous production, with 1980s units still in daily service. One point shy of perfect only because the plastic rivets holding the barrel plate demonstrably embrittle over decades.

Best for

Watch out

It is gloriously, unapologetically loud, and at nearly two kilograms it is furniture. Unicomp's case molding tolerances are visibly looser than IBM's were — function is unaffected, vanity slightly is.
