The HL-L2400D is the current iteration of the HL-L2xxx platform whose predecessors have spent a decade-plus in home offices printing tax forms without drama. In a product category defined by DRM’d ink, wet cartridges, and subscription nagware, Brother’s basic laser line is the boring exception — which, by this site’s standards, is the highest compliment available.

Framework Laptop 13

The Framework 13 is this category’s thesis stated as hardware: every component — screen, keyboard, battery, ports, even the mainboard — is user-replaceable, QR-coded to its own repair guide, and sold individually in an official parts marketplace. When a new CPU generation arrives, you buy a mainboard, not a laptop, and the old board gets a second life as a tiny desktop. No major manufacturer has committed to owner repair this completely, possibly ever. That earns a listing. It does not yet earn a track record.

Lenovo ThinkPad T480

The T480 is where the classic ThinkPad formula made its last full appearance: two SODIMM slots, a socketed 2.5" bay, a hot-swappable external battery bridging an internal one, and a hardware maintenance manual Lenovo publishes as if repair were a normal thing owners do — because on this machine it is. After 2018 the T-series started soldering memory and slimming away options. The T480 is the checkpoint the repair community keeps recommending, years after its warranty cards expired.

Sennheiser HD 600

The HD 600 has been in continuous production since 1997, and the audio world has spent those decades failing to agree on anything except this: it is the reference. Studios calibrate against it, reviewers benchmark against it, and Sennheiser — through every corporate reshuffle since — has kept making it, because it keeps selling to people who already owned one for twenty years.

The story

The HD 600 is the 1997 refinement of 1993’s HD 580 — same chassis, improved drivers — released when Sennheiser was still a family company in Wedemark, Germany. It became the rare product that outlived its own successor cycle: the HD 650 (2003) and HD 660 variants joined the line rather than replacing it, and the audio press still stages the family rematch every few years to check whether the original has been dethroned. It hasn’t.

In production since 1991 — with a lineage running back to the 1985 MDR-V6 — it is the closest thing pro audio has to the F-91W: cheap, unglamorous, everywhere, and quietly unkillable. Products stay “the standard” for thirty-four years for exactly one reason: the people who depend on them daily keep choosing them.

Unicomp New Model M

Why it’s here

The buckling-spring Model M entered production at IBM in 1985. When the corporate line ended, former employees at Unicomp bought the actual tooling and kept manufacturing it in Lexington, Kentucky — where they still do. That makes the Model M one of the only consumer electronics designs on earth in essentially continuous production for forty years. The 1980s originals clacking away in server rooms today aren’t survivors; they’re just Model Ms.
