Why it’s here

The Framework 13 is this category’s thesis stated as hardware: every component — screen, keyboard, battery, ports, even the mainboard — is user-replaceable, QR-coded to its own repair guide, and sold individually in an official parts marketplace. When a new CPU generation arrives, you buy a mainboard, not a laptop, and the old board gets a second life as a tiny desktop. No major manufacturer has committed to owner repair this completely, possibly ever. That earns a listing. It does not yet earn a track record.

The story

Framework was founded in 2019 by Nirav Patel, a former Oculus engineering lead, on a premise the industry had abandoned: that a thin, modern laptop and a fully serviceable one aren’t opposites. The first Laptop 13 shipped in 2021 and iFixit’s teardown promptly awarded it a perfect 10/10 — a score the site treats as nearly mythical — calling it “above and beyond even what we hoped for.”

The real test began after the applause. Five years on, Framework has shipped six generations of interchangeable mainboards across Intel and AMD, added displays and batteries that retrofit into the original chassis, and kept the marketplace stocked. Every year that continues, the boldest number on this scoreboard — that longevity 8 — gets less conservative.

Durability report

Here our methodology bites, deliberately: track record beats promises, and Framework’s is about five years old. Early units surfaced hinge looseness, expansion-card wear, and some battery complaints — each answered with redesigned, backward-compatible parts, which is both reassuring (the system works) and the point (things needed fixing). One-year ownership reports land the same way: happy with the hardware, watchful about the company. The aluminum chassis is competent rather than tank-like. The existential risk is corporate, not mechanical: a modular laptop from a startup is durable only while the parts marketplace is. Every year Framework survives, this score’s biggest number gets less conservative.

Repair & parts reality

A perfect score, and we don’t expect to award many. The single included tool opens everything; guides are official, photographed, and honest about difficulty; parts pricing is public; and mainboard swaps across generations have now happened repeatedly — the upgrade path is proven practice, not roadmap vapor. Framework publishes schematics-level detail other vendors treat as trade secrets. If the industry copied one page from anyone’s notebook, it should be this one.

The long-term math

$1,050 up front is the most expensive bet on this scoreboard. If the rebuild model holds for twelve years of board swaps and battery refreshes, the arithmetic lands near $120 a year — respectable, not miraculous. If the company or marketplace fails in year six, the math collapses to ordinary. That asymmetry is why the value score is measured rather than evangelical: we’re rating the laptop, and the laptop’s future has a dependency we can’t audit.

Early adopters who want to vote with a large amount of wallet for repairable computing, and who accept being part of the longevity experiment they're funding.

Watch out

The company is younger than most warranties we track, and the repairability promise is only as durable as Framework itself. Early hinges, ports, and batteries have had teething reports — fixable by design, but fixes you may actually perform.
